Ontario Secondary School Diploma
Thirty credits, a literacy requirement and a top-six Grade 12 average for university admission.
The OSSD requires 30 credits, 40 hours of community involvement and the literacy requirement. For university admission what actually matters is your top six Grade 12 U or M courses, which concentrates an enormous amount of weight into a single year.

Worth knowing about Ontario OSSD
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
University offers are based on your top six Grade 12 U or M courses, with specific prerequisites for the programme — which six they are is a strategic decision, not an accident.
Mid-term Grade 12 marks are transmitted to OUAC and used for early conditional offers, so the first semester of Grade 12 matters more than students expect.
The OSSLT literacy requirement must be met to graduate, with the OSSLC course available as an alternative route.
Engineering and science programmes typically require Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors, which constrains which six courses can be your best six.
Semestered schools compress a full course into five months, so a weak month is a much larger fraction of the grade than it would be in a full-year timetable.

Ontario OSSD: fair questions
Which six courses should I count?
The six highest that still satisfy your programme prerequisites — and the prerequisite constraint is what catches people out. Engineering needs Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors whether or not those are your strongest marks, so plan the set early.
How much do first-semester marks matter?
More than most Grade 12 students realise. They go to OUAC and drive early conditional offers, which means a weak first semester is a real cost even if you recover by June.
How do I handle a semestered course?
Treat every week as worth twice what it would be in a full-year course, because it is. Daniel front-loads recall practice so that content from September is still available in January rather than needing to be relearned.
