The Abitur total combines marks from every semester of the Qualifikationsphase with results from the written and oral examinations. Points are awarded on a 0 to 15 scale and converted at the end into a grade from 1.0, the best, down to 4.0, the minimum pass.

Worth knowing about Abitur
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
Every Qualifikationsphase semester contributes to the final total, so the Abitur is effectively a two-year accumulation rather than one examination season.
Leistungskurse, the advanced courses, carry more weight in the total than Grundkurse and are examined in greater depth.
Each Land sets its own examinations within the common framework, so material from another Land is a rough guide rather than a reliable one.
At least one examination is oral, and it is assessed differently from the written papers — it needs its own preparation.
Numerus Clausus cut-offs for restricted subjects move every year with demand, so planning to last year's number is unreliable.

How should I prepare for the oral examination?
As a distinct skill, because it is one. It rewards structured spoken argument under questioning rather than written recall, and Sarah can hold practice examinations in German at the level you are sitting.
Do Leistungskurse deserve more revision time?
They carry more weight in the total and are examined in more depth, so yes in proportion — but the Grundkurse still accumulate across every semester, and neglecting them is a slow leak rather than a single loss.
Can I still reach a good grade if an early semester went badly?
