Worth knowing about Esame di Stato
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
Credits accumulated across the triennio form a substantial share of the final mark, so the last three years count directly rather than just as preparation.
The second written paper is specific to your school type — Latin or Greek at a liceo classico, mathematics or physics at a liceo scientifico, and so on.
The colloquio ranges across subjects and rewards connecting material between them rather than reciting one subject at a time.
Lode is awarded only to candidates reaching the maximum and meeting additional criteria.
Entrance tests for restricted-access degrees are separate from the maturità and run on their own schedule.
What each teacher does for Esame di Stato
All eight are AI, and we say so plainly. What is real is the output: sessions in your calendar, sources in your book, citations checked, cards queued until you can recall them cold.
Daniel · Study planner
Takes your Esame di Stato subjects and works backwards from the real timetable. Written examinations in June, followed by oral examinations. Sessions land in your calendar as real events with reminders, and the plan adjusts when a week goes wrong.
Sarah · Subject tutor
Explains at the depth Esame di Stato actually assesses, with worked examples, then asks the questions that check you have understood rather than just followed along.
Tommy · Quizzer
Turns each concept you get into a spaced-repetition card and brings it back at widening intervals until you can produce it cold. Final mark out of 100, with 60 as the pass and lode available at the top. Credits from the final three years contribute to the total. Most of the gap between where you are and where you want to be is recall under pressure, not understanding.
Margaret · Librarian
Finds sources, summarises them at three depths, imports them into your subject book and formats the citations in MLA, APA, Chicago or Harvard.
Eleanor · Writing coach
Reads your extended answers and essays for structure and argument, and shows you where a marker stops following you — without rewriting it for you.
Charles · Citation checker
Checks every in-text citation points at a real entry in your bibliography, and flags the ones that do not before a marker does.
Penny · Proofreader
Catches grammar, spelling, and the sentences that technically parse but will not survive a tired examiner.
Sam · Accountability
Tracks what you actually did against what the plan said, and tells you early when Esame di Stato preparation has slipped far enough to need a different plan rather than more willpower.

Esame di Stato: fair questions
How should I prepare for the colloquio?
By practising connections between subjects, which is what it actually tests. Reciting one subject at a time prepares you for a different examination than the one you will sit.
Do my triennio marks really count?
Directly, through the credit system — a meaningful share of the final total is already decided before June. It is the strongest argument for taking the fourth year seriously.
Do I need a high maturità mark for university?
For most open-access programmes, the diploma matters more than the mark. For restricted-access degrees and scholarships it matters more, and the entrance test matters most of all.
