KCSE is sat at the end of Form 4 across seven or eight subjects. English, Kiswahili and Mathematics are compulsory, alongside sciences, humanities and technical subjects. The mean grade certifies; the cluster points place.

Worth knowing about KCSE
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
English, Kiswahili and Mathematics are compulsory, so they are in everyone's revision plan whether or not they suit the student.
Cluster points weight the four subjects most relevant to each degree programme, which means the subjects that matter most depend on what you intend to study.
A C+ mean grade is the usual minimum for direct university entry, with programme-specific requirements on top.
Science practical papers are examined separately from theory papers.
Cut-off points move year to year with cohort size and performance, so planning to a fixed historical cut-off is unreliable.

What mean grade do I need?
C+ is the usual minimum for direct university entry, but that is the floor rather than the target — competitive programmes are decided on cluster points, and those depend on four specific subjects.
How do I work out my cluster subjects?
From the programme you are targeting — KUCCPS publishes the cluster for each course. It is worth doing in Form 3, because it tells you which four subjects deserve the protected revision time.
How should I prepare for practicals?
With their own scheduled sessions. Practical papers carry real marks, they are examined separately, and they reward familiarity with method and measurement rather than theory recall.
