The engineering entrance route — JEE Main for NITs and eligibility, JEE Advanced for the IITs.
JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions and determines both NIT admission and eligibility for JEE Advanced, which is the IIT entrance. The content is Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but the questions are considerably harder than board questions on the same syllabus.

Worth knowing about JEE (Main & Advanced)
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
JEE Main scores are normalised across sessions using percentiles, so your raw mark alone does not determine your rank.
Multiple JEE Main sessions mean the best attempt counts, which makes the first session a genuine diagnostic rather than an all-or-nothing event.
Negative marking makes accuracy under time pressure as important as knowledge — answering everything is usually the wrong strategy.
JEE Advanced questions are multi-step and often combine topics, so single-topic drilling underprepares you for the paper structure.
The syllabus is Class 11 and 12 content, which means board preparation and JEE preparation share material but not question style.
