The ACT is accepted interchangeably with the SAT by US universities. Its defining characteristic is time pressure — the questions are individually more straightforward than the SAT's but come at you faster, which suits some students and punishes others.

Worth knowing about ACT
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
Pacing is the central skill: running out of time on a section is a more common cause of a low ACT score than not knowing the material.
English, Math and Reading are the core. Whether Science and Writing are part of your sitting depends on the format and options you register for, so confirm this when you book rather than on the day.
The Science section tests data interpretation rather than recalled science content — graphs, tables and conflicting viewpoints, not memorised facts.
Superscoring across sittings is widely accepted, which makes a second attempt low-risk.
The maths content reaches slightly further than the SAT's, so it rewards having covered more of the curriculum.

ACT: fair questions
How do I stop running out of time?
Practise under a stricter clock than the real one, and drill the decision to move on. Most ACT time loss comes from over-investing in two or three hard questions, and that is a trainable habit rather than a knowledge gap.
Do I need to know science for the Science section?
Barely. It is reading comprehension applied to graphs, tables and experimental descriptions. Sarah works through how to read an experimental setup quickly, which is the actual skill being tested.
Does the ACT or SAT look better to colleges?
Neither — US universities treat them as interchangeable. Choose on which one you score better under timed conditions, and then commit to it rather than preparing for both.
