The SAT is now digital and section-adaptive: how you perform on the first module of each section determines the difficulty of the second. It is shorter than the old paper test, which raises the cost of a slow start, and it is taken on fixed national dates several times a year.

Worth knowing about SAT
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
The test is section-adaptive: the second module of each section gets harder or easier based on the first, so the opening module carries disproportionate weight.
Many universities are test-optional, but a strong score still helps and some programmes and scholarships continue to require one — check each institution rather than assuming.
The PSAT/NMSQT is both practice and the qualifying route for National Merit recognition, so the junior-year sitting is not purely a rehearsal.
Question types repeat across administrations, which makes systematic drilling of your specific error patterns unusually effective.
Superscoring is common — many universities take your best section scores across sittings — which changes the calculus on retaking.

SAT: fair questions
How many times should I take it?
Two or three sittings is typical, and superscoring means a retake usually has little downside. Past three, score gains flatten and the time is nearly always better spent on your GPA or your essays.
How should I study for the adaptive format?
Build accuracy on the early questions, since the first module sets the ceiling for the section. Tommy drills your specific recurring error types rather than random practice, which is what moves a plateaued score.
Is the SAT or the ACT better for me?
Take a timed practice of each and compare percentiles — universities accept both equally, so the right test is simply the one you score better on. It is worth resolving early, because splitting prep across both is the most common way to end up mediocre at each.
