AP courses run for a full school year and are examined in a two-week window in May. A score of 3 is usually the minimum for credit, 4 or 5 at more selective institutions. Worth knowing about AP (Advanced Placement)
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
Every AP exam falls in the same two-week May window, so taking five means five exams in ten days on top of end-of-year coursework.
Free-response questions carry a large share of the marks and are scored against published rubrics — practising against the rubric is more useful than practising in general.
Credit policies differ sharply between universities: the same 4 may be full credit at one institution and nothing at another. Check the specific policy before choosing subjects for credit reasons.
AP Capstone's Seminar and Research courses are assessed largely through submitted work across the year rather than a single May exam.
Course rigour counts in admissions independently of the score, which is why students take APs at schools that offer no credit for them.

AP (Advanced Placement): fair questions
How many APs should I take?
Enough to show rigour, few enough that you can actually do them well — and the honest constraint is that they all examine in the same fortnight. Four done properly reads better than seven done thinly, and it is a far more survivable May.
How do I prepare for free-response questions?
Against the rubric. College Board publishes scoring guidelines, and most lost marks are structural rather than conceptual — a point not stated explicitly, evidence not tied back to the claim. Eleanor reviews your responses for exactly that.
When should I start revising for May?
Serious review from roughly March, with recall practice running from the start of the year. Tommy queues concepts as you cover them, so by April you are consolidating rather than relearning a year of material from scratch.
