HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE and SACE — five state systems feeding one national ATAR.

Australia certificates by state. New South Wales has the HSC, Victoria the VCE, Queensland the QCE, Western Australia the WACE and South Australia the SACE. They differ in how much of the grade is internal, when exams run and how subjects are scaled — but they all feed into the ATAR, a single national rank.

How the Australian system is shaped

Ages12–16

Years 7 to 10

General secondary schooling, with NAPLAN assessments along the way and subject selection for senior years happening at the end.

Ages16–17

Year 11

Preliminary or Unit 1 and 2 year. In most states it does not count towards the ATAR directly, but it determines what you can continue into Year 12.

Ages17–18

Year 12

The certificating year. Internal assessment runs all year and external exams land in October and November.

The calendar you are actually planning against

Academic year
Late January or early February to early December, in four terms.
Exam season
External examinations run from October into November, with results and ATARs in December.
University entry
The ATAR is a rank, not a score: it tells universities what percentage of your cohort you finished above. Applications go through state admissions centres — UAC, VTAC, QTAC, TISC and SATAC — with offers released in December and January.
Boards covered
HSC (New South Wales), VCE (Victoria), QCE (Queensland), WACE (Western Australia), SACE (South Australia)

They are AI, and we will not pretend otherwise. What is real is the work they produce against Australian requirements.

Daniel · Study planner

Builds the week backwards from the real timetable. External examinations run from October into November, with results and ATARs in December. Sessions go into your calendar as real events, not onto a wall chart.

Sarah · Subject tutor

Explains what you are stuck on at the level your qualification actually assesses, then checks you have understood it.

Margaret · Librarian

Finds sources, summarises them at three depths, and formats citations in MLA, APA, Chicago or Harvard.

Tommy · Quizzer

Turns what you have understood into spaced-repetition cards and brings them back until you can recall them cold.

Eleanor · Writing coach

Reviews essay structure and argument, and tells you where a marker would lose the thread.

Charles · Citation checker

Verifies every in-text citation resolves to a real entry in your bibliography.

Penny · Proofreader

Catches grammar, spelling and clarity problems without flattening your voice.

Sam · Accountability

Tells you honestly when the plan has stopped being realistic, early enough to change it.

Australia: fair questions

Does the ATAR change how I should revise?

Yes, in one important way: it is a rank, so scaling matters. A subject that scales well can be worth more than the same mark elsewhere. That said, scaling rewards doing well in a hard subject, not enrolling in one you will struggle in — a distinction plenty of students get wrong.

How do I handle internal assessment running all year?

By planning it, because it does not announce itself the way an exam timetable does. Daniel maps every SAC, assignment and internal task into your calendar from the start of the year, which is where most Year 12 stress actually comes from.

Do you support all the state systems?

HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE and SACE each have their own page. The differences in internal weighting and exam timing are large enough that a generic Year 12 plan is not much use.
