The WACE combines school assessment with external examinations in ATAR courses, weighted equally in most subjects. Separately, students must demonstrate literacy and numeracy standards through OLNA or NAPLAN before they can be awarded the certificate.

Worth knowing about WACE (Western Australia)
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
OLNA must be met to be awarded the WACE, and it can be attempted in multiple rounds from Year 10 onward — leaving it late is a common and avoidable problem.
In ATAR courses the school mark and the examination mark are generally weighted equally, and school marks are moderated against exam performance.
Externally Set Tasks apply to General courses, which are not ATAR-bearing but still sit on the certificate.
At least four ATAR courses must be completed to receive an ATAR.
Practical and performance components in some courses are examined separately from the written paper.

WACE (Western Australia): fair questions
What happens if I have not passed OLNA?
You cannot be awarded the WACE until you do, regardless of your ATAR courses. There are multiple attempt rounds from Year 10, so the fix is to sit it early rather than discovering the problem in Year 12.
How are school marks and exam marks combined?
Generally equally in ATAR courses, with school marks moderated against your cohort's exam performance. That moderation is why your standing within the school cohort matters alongside your raw mark.
How many ATAR courses do I need?
At least four to receive an ATAR, and most students take five. Whether the fifth is worth it depends on whether it lifts your best four or dilutes them — worth deciding deliberately.
