The VCE is structured as Units 1 and 2 in Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 in Year 12. Units 3 and 4 produce a study score out of 50, built from School-Assessed Coursework and external examinations. Study scores are then scaled by subject before feeding the ATAR.

Worth knowing about VCE (Victoria)
The specifics below are the ones that change how you should plan. Always check the current specification with your school or the awarding body — specifications get revised, and the version you are entered for is the one that counts.
A study score of 30 is defined as the cohort average, so the number is inherently relative — a 35 means something specific about where you sat, not a percentage.
School-Assessed Coursework runs through the year and is statistically moderated against exam performance.
Subject scaling adjusts study scores by the strength of the cohort, which is why Specialist Mathematics and the Languages scale upward.
Taking a Unit 3 and 4 sequence in Year 11 is common for strong students and banks a study score a year early.
The top four study scores plus increments from your fifth and sixth subjects form the ATAR aggregate.

What is a good study score?
30 is the cohort average by construction, 40 puts you in roughly the top 8 per cent of a subject's cohort. Which number you should target depends entirely on the ATAR your course needs — Daniel plans backwards from that rather than from a generic 'do well'.
Should I do a Unit 3 and 4 subject in Year 11?
It banks a study score early and lightens Year 12, which is genuinely valuable. It only works if you can carry it alongside Units 1 and 2 — done badly it costs you a study score permanently.
How should I manage SACs?
Like a series of small exams, because that is how they are weighted. Daniel maps every SAC date at the start of the year, and Tommy keeps recall running so a SAC does not require relearning the whole unit from scratch.
